The Architect of Genocide: Himmler and the Final Solution (Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry Series, 14)
Published in Paperback by Brandeis Univ (September, 1992)
Author: Richard Breitman
Average review score:

Shows Himmler as a most gruesome crusader.
Not a biography of the Reichsfuhrer, but a carefully researched and annotated analysis of his role in the final solution. Himmler's own office logs and appointment books, where extant, are convincingly used. The most thorough account to date of the so called Madagscar proposal which preoccupied the nazis in the late 1930s as a way of exiling Jews. Himmler's often mutually suspicious dealings with underlings such as Heydrich and Eichmann are particularly well portrayed, although his relationship with Hitler is sometimes sketchy. The years 1944 and 1945 are treated rather briefly, presumably because Himmler's initiatives were mainly restricted to trying to arrange coverup of the atrocities. But Breitman has done a first rate job in showing us how Himmler's bureaucratic mind ticked. The book illustrates that you don't need to be a personal sadist to organize murder on a massive scale.

Superior biography of Himmler
Heinrich Himmler, one of the most reviled personalities in modern history comes fully to light in this insightful study. What is it that makes a person evil? That is at the heart of Breitman's absorbing book. Unlike a devilish Faustian caricature, the narrative shows the SS Reichsfuehrer, a mundane, pedantic organizer who came terrifyingly close to translating Hitler's vision of of a "racially-pure" Europe into reality.

Heinrich Himmler may be the personification of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil." A man who fawned over children, stopped to pick flowers and was every thoughtful with those under him, quietly and efficiently produced the machinery to send millions to their death.

(...) Breitman's book is not a "popular biography" in the modern sense, but rather a scholarly and academic treatment. However, this is a weighty subject and the author accomplishes much more with this approach through a fascinating narrative that assures the reader that this is an exquisititely researched picture of one of the most dispised personalities of modern time. Highly recommended.

Architects of the Information Society: Thirty-Five Years of the Laboratory for Computer Science at MIT
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (30 April, 1999)
Authors: Simson L. Garfinkel and Hal Abelson
Average review score:

Good insight in to the significance of academic reseach labs
This book was an excellent read. Garfinkel was able to write about some of the most interesting developments in network technology. This book is great for people who dont have a complete understanding of what the internet is all about and where it came from. Garfinkel draws a lot of attention and gives a lot of much needed credit to academic research labs for their impact on computer technology. The book's three main parts take the reader on a journey from the development of project MAC (short for multiple access computer and machine aided cognition) in the Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) in MIT to the growth of large computer networks to the impact these networks and systems will have on our society and economy in the future. The book gave me a great history lesson on some of the lesser known aspects of computer network development. I'd recommend this book to anyone who doesnt understand how many years and how long the road has been to developing the computer systems of today.

How I Learned About the Heroes of Internet
It is a pleasure for me to write a review on "Architects of the Information Society ", because I have so much things to say. I have been telling to my friends about this book since I finished first ten pages. I am not talking only with computer scientists about the things I have learned. My mother even loved the stories in it, although she had never used a computer or never logged in Internet. Simson L. Garfinkel has been very successful in choosing the right words, which will make the story interesting for everyone. It is written for everyone who knows what computers and Internet are. It starts fascinating the reader by telling stories about people who think that Internet was invented by some companies connecting the local area networks (LANs) in their office and about two business men praising Microsoft founder Bill Gates for having the vision to invent Windows being unaware of nearly all of the "breakthrough" technologies in Windows had actually been invented more than thirty years before, at MIT just a few miles away from the coffee shop they were in. I think everyone who uses Internet must read this book to have an idea what and who was behind it and to love to use Internet more. It has been written for the celebration of 35th anniversary of the foundation of Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) at MIT. Project MAC (short for Multiple Access Computer and Machine-Aided Cognition) was started in 1963. It was renamed as MIT Laboratory for Computer Science in 1975. Being MIT alumni Garfinkel was lucky in following the tracks of best stories to tell what has been done in LCS. It was Prof. Hal Abelson's idea to make Garfinkel write such a book; he is also the editor of the book. In the preface Garfinkel says that "This book as much his as mine." meaning Abelson. There are three essays in the book. While deciding the themes of the essays, they planned to mention the themes that have been fundamental to the work at LCS. First essay is about the building of "multiple-access computer" by "time-sharing". Second essay is about the growth of computer networks. Third essay is about how networks computer systems have influenced and will continue to influence U.S. economy and society. Garfinkel defines this economy as the economy based on the "exchange of information". The best sentence to show the importance of this book is written by Garfinkel "The step from information systems to information societies was first achieved at MIT in project MAC".

The Bfi Companion to Horror
Published in Hardcover by Continuum (January, 1997)
Authors: Kim Newman, British Film Institute, and Ramsey Campbell
Average review score:

Great Book!
Marvellously comprehensive, with quite a diverse range of topics relating to horror and people who are associated with the genre, and other such entries.
A pretty handy guide for horror film buffs, as this is the major category it covers (couldn't expect more from a "BFI" (British Film Institute) Companion though, could you? :-) ).
On the downside, some of the entries can be a little overcrowded with film titles, but good for the completist, i guess.
I'd love to see further editions, with more up-to-date info (it WAS printed in '96, afterall.)
Defintately a recommended buy.

valuable reference book
As a writer, I have found Newman's reference book helpful. It includes subjects not addressed elsewhere and does a good job of explaining subjects that have been widely covered.

Building Toward Crisis: Saddam's Strategy for Survival (Policy Papers (Washington Institute for Near East Policy), No. 48.)
Published in Paperback by Washington Institute For Near East Policy (July, 1998)
Author: Amatzia Baram
Average review score:

complete.
I read this book for an Arab politics class this year.

It is written by an Israeli, so inevitably there is a slant. However, Israelis understand Arab and Islamic politics better than anyone else in the world, including the Arabs themselves. It is essential to their survival.

It details the power structure of Iraq's tribes, it explains Saddam's motivations and shows that they are indeed rational, etc.

I highly recommend this policy paper in book format.

one of the world's great survivors
One of the most informative books on the Iraqi regime in the post Gulf War enviornment. For an understanding of Saddam's ability to survive through the 90's and the methods and Iraqi institutions 'one of the world's great survivors' has relied upon, Building Towards Crisis is an excellent book. Highly recommended for anyone really interested in Iraq.

Crazy Ji: Chinese Religion and Popular Literature (Harvard-Yenching Institute Monograph Series, 48)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1998)
Author: Meir Shahar
Average review score:

Scholarly analysis of literary sources for a Chinese cult.
Crazy Ji, usually known in modern Chinese as Jigong Huofo, is one of the most colorful figures in modern Chinese folklore. The tattered Song-dynasty monk wandered China and appeared to violate his monastic vows by drinking wine, eating meat, and even (in some accounts) sleeping with women, but (almost) inevitably this would turn out to be in the service of public good and the saving of souls. That, at any rate, is the modern picture of him.

In this interesting study, Meir Shahar carefully reviews Crazy Ji's representation in literature from the first written notice of him (in 1217) through the present, using his case to explore a broader claim that in China the cult of a god from a regional to a national scale could be spread by literature, particularly novels. Thus the study of the genre of Chinese "religious novels" of late imperial times is a necessary part of understanding how various gods came to have the followings they had and the characteristics that were eventually attributed to them.

If you are looking for a translation or retelling of the Jigong story in English, this is not the book for you. That book has still to be written. But as a case study in the development of a Chinese deity over several centuries, and the interactions of Chinese popular literature with Chinese popular religion, the book is of considerable interest.

Crazy Ji is an original, scholarly, and fascinating book
Crazy Ji: Chinese Religion and Popular Literature is a must for anyone interested in Chinese religion, Chinese fiction, and Chinese popular culture.

Shahar's book is the first I know of to demonstrate the crucial role that fiction, drama, and nowadays television and cinema play in spreading deities' cults in China.

Crazy Ji is not only meticulously researched, it is also extremely well written, and it is a real pleasure to read.

In short: it is highly recommended.

Creative Floral Arranging

Creative Floral Arrangements
The Book arrived in a timely fashion. The photograply was beautiful. However, I found it to be a coffee-table book rather than a text book which I needed.

Creative Floral Arranging
I loved the books big, colorful illustrations. The instructions were step by step and easy to follow. The materials list for each project made it easy to get organized for the project before I started. I also found the floral arranging tips very useful. I worked at a floral shop for a brief period of time and found the instructions easier to follow than my trainer! A good book for people who love to make crafts for their homes, friends or families.

Drawn into the Light: Jean Francois Millet
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (June, 1999)
Authors: Alexandra R. Murphy, Richard Rand, Brian T. Allen, James Ganz, Alexis Goodin, Jean-Francois Millet, Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Frick Art, and Historical Center
Average review score:

Nice book, but the selection of works is limited
This book is a catalogue for an exhibition that was held at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The reproductions do not represent the full work of Millet but rather the selection of works that was presented in that exhibition. There are many reproductions of drawings, pastels and watercolors, and only a few paintings. Many of the drawings are preparations for larger scale paintings. I bought the book after a visit to the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and was disappointed not to find many paintings that I remember from that visit - not even "The Angelus", which is probably Millet's most famous work. Still there is a large number of beautiful drawings and paintings, and the introductory text is interesting. I wish the reproductions would be larger - there are only about ten full page reproductions throughout the book.

Very pleased with the quality of the book
This is the first quality pyblication I have found on Millet. While I was looking for more of a coffe table type book of his paintings, I was slighlty disappointed that many of his works were not included but the history of his life more than makes up for it.

The Economic Dimensions of National Security
Published in Paperback by RAND (January, 1994)

Average review score:

Economic Security in the Post Cold-War era
In this book, it gave us a new vision of international affair, gave us a new direction for the policymakers in thinking of national security.

To gain the economic security is not just keep one nation¡¦s scale or the firms as the big as possible. This book told us that biggest are not the key element for the economic dimensions of international system. To build up a related-capability is more important for global power like U.S.

One purpose for the authors is to emphasis the importance of economic instruments for national security in the post-cold era, which had been seen as ¡§low level politics¡¨ before!

It would be better to emphasis the ¡§Economic Security¡¨ in the title of this book, not just use the term like ¡§The Economic Dimension of National Security¡¨!

New Dimension for the New World Order
In the post-cold war era, we should re-think the national security from some other view. This book had made it!
